I highly recommend this excellent book for those wonderful and well-meaning Christian brothers and sisters of mine who correctly understand that salvation is a free gift, yet mistakenly believe that through our human effort we must do something to "maintain" it, lest we run the risk of losing it. A true born-again, regenerated, justified, and redeemed Christian cannot lose salvation. Nothing can separate a Christian from God's love (Romans 8:38-39). Nothing can remove a Christian from God's hand (John 10:28-29). Those who mistakenly believe we need to maintain our salvation essentially give mankind far more credit than we deserve while having a very narrow view of God's amazing grace. As Lutzer aptly writes: "All the credit for our salvation goes to God alone. There is no room for boasting, no opportunity to say we deserved it or helped Him with it." If we are responsible for maintaining our salvation, that would mean we not only have a hand in our salvation, but that we play a large role in it. This would clearly give us great reason to boast in heaven. Salvation would certainly not be a gift if the believer was responsible for maintaining it. Good works are the result of salvation, not requirements for salvation.God is both willing and able to guarantee and maintain the salvation He has given us. And Dr. Lutzer does a masterful job of illuminating this truth that the Bible so clearly teaches.Readers of this book will come to understand the breadth of what took place at Calvary and what Christ meant when He breathed out His last words: "It is finished" (John 19:30). They will also come to understand the great inner transformation that occurs in those who have truly been regenerated.Thankfully, we sinful and wretched humans do not have the power to somehow undo what Jesus Christ fully and completely accomplished at the cross, or to thwart the plan that our almighty Father had in place before the foundation of this world was laid."He who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life" (John 5:24).A promise you can count on.
