We'd been using a cheap, plastic Home Depot grab for our kitchen trash can. You know the kind -- where a detached lid balances precariously on two pegs and falls in if so much as a strong breeze goes past. And, honest to god, we'd had to put an upside-down bucket in the bottom of it, because it was too tall to hold a 13-gallon bag properly. (despite being sold as a 13-gallon can)Well, Christmas came around and it was my fiance who struggled most with that can, so hey! Funny AND household-needed gift. (Don't worry, I got her a ring, too.) I looked at what was on Amazon and they were all ridiculously priced! Then I found this one, with what seemed a reasonable price tag. But what I didn't notice, was the $39.90 shipping cost! By the time I caught it, this new can was already on its way.I contacted the seller, virtually screaming at them about the ridiculously high shipping charge! They were gouging, I thought; Rolling their profits into the shipping, I thought... Then I checked what it would ACTUALLY cost to ship this weight and size through each major carrier. And every one of them quoted a charge MORE than $39.90.The seller was very amenable, despite my initial attitude. And I decided I'd go ahead and receive the can and see if it was, somehow, worth the money. I'll tell you here and now that there is no trash can in the world capable of being worth $100, in my mind. That said -- this one is as close as it gets. It's solid, stylish, has a separate plastic bin inside to hold the bag, the foot pedal is convenient and feels sturdy to step on, and the slow-shut mechanism adds a nice touch. When its closed, its CLOSED -- which means you aren't smelling yesterday's coffee grounds, and this morning's banana peel when you walk by. And the stainless steel finish really does resist the usual fingerprints and markings that collect on the exterior. Also, stainless steel goes with just about any kitchen décor, so it will survive the new countertops we're hoping to do this Spring.I say again, it's a trash can! And I never would have opened my wallet, had I seen the sticker with shipping and tax. But now that its here, I can't deny that you DO get what you pay for. And this is a 5-star trash can.
