This quickly became a book that I could not put down! As a basketball coach myself, I have come across Don Meyer and some of his ideas and principles but did not really know the full story. It is amazing to see his transformation after the accident and diagnosis of his cancer. I think Meyer's heart was always in the right place and the principles he stood for were honest and pure. However, I believe he bought into the lie that coaches must sometimes use fear in order to get their players to accomplish things. We often say that people are driven and competitive to excuse some of their behaviors, especially if they are getting the results on the scoreboard. Think about the relationships with his wife and children if he had died in the accident and not had those years to truly tell them how he felt about them? I think this is a great case study for coaches to reflect and see how Coach Meyer coached and lived his life and the changes he made after the accident.
