The Dovells began in 1957 as a high school band named the Brooktones. In 1960, two members left to form a new quartet and two others came aboard. At this point the Brooktones consisted of Len Barry, Mark Stevens and Arnie Satin (all stage names) plus new recruits William Shunkwiler and Jerry Sirlin. While negotiating a contract with Philly's CHANCELLOR Records, the group also auditioned for CAMEO/PARKWAY and were signed. Rehearsals went rockily and eventually the two defectors (alias Jerry Summers and Mike Denns) rejoined. A CAMEO exec suggested a name change to the Deauvilles, after a hotel he recently vacationed at on Miami Beach, but the group simplified its spelling to "Dovells."In late spring 1961, "Bristol Stomp" was cut to take advantage of a new dance craze, the Stomp. The song languished on the charts all summer then started to sell in mid-September, peaking at Billboard's #2 spot on 10/23. Five other dance sides from '62 charted modestly; the boys never broke the Top 10 again. In terms of monster sellers, they're technically a one-hit wonder. The line-up of their 1962 LP, ALL THE HITS OF THE TEEN GROUPS (P 7010) includes "Bristol Twistin' Annie," which went as high as #27 nationally. As they were at the time thought by many to be African-American, their "All the Hits" is mostly covers of black doowop and r&b artists.PROGRAM--SIDE ONE[2:04] Why Do Fools Fall in Love?[2:30] To Make a Long Story Short[2:25] Trickle, Trickle[3:09] (I'll Remember) In the Still of the Night[2:35] Your Last Chance[2:21] There Goes My BabySIDE TWO[2:12] Bristol Twistin' Annie[2:39] Two People in the World[2:17] The Clock[2:13] Oh What a Night[2:30] Little Bitty Pretty One[2:43] I Want You to Be My GirlTOTAL TIME: 29:38
